Cork first to offer degree in cloud computing

Cork Institute of Technology claims to be the first educational establishment to offer degree in cloud computing One of the complaints made about IT teaching at universities and colleges is that they are slow to react to industry trends. It's not an accusation that can be levelled at Cork Industry of Technology which claims it is the first educational establishment in the world to offer a degree in cloud computing. There are other courses in cloud computing, however, Aberdeen University offers an MSc in cloud computing as does Sheffield Hallam.

The CIT course has been developed in conjunction with EMC and aims to provide students with a range of skills including:

• Cloud architecture planning and management

• Design and management of virtual environments

• Consolidation of data centres and enterprise storage systems

• Security techniques

• Project management.

Announcing the launch of the course, Dr Brendan Murphy, president of CIT said: "We have a longstanding relationship with EMC and this new initiative builds on those relationships but takes things to a new and exciting level where the subject of the courses are at the cutting edge of current IT developments and where the engagement with EMC and others can be extended internationally. I believe that this cloud computing initiative is an example of the real benefits that can be gained at the intersection of higher education and private enterprise."

The move is in line with Ireland's aggressive promotion of itself as a centre of excellence for cloud computing. The Irish Development Agency (IDA) signed a deal with Microsoft in March that would provide financial incentives for US companies looking to move to Ireland. And earlier this month, Quest launched a new centre in Cork, creating around 150 jobs.
